Pelecas Country Club is an 18th century estate converted into a luxury hotel with all modern amenities. The estate is located on grounds covering an area of 50 acres, which totally remove the visitor from the hustle and bustle of modern-day Corfu. Still, all the tourist industry trappings, should one wish to indulge, are only 8 kilometres away. The west coach beaches, are even closer, at just 4 kilometres. In 1990, the latest owner of the estate of the Velianitis family, Nikos Velianitis, an engineer by profession, began a restoration project, to convert all the buildings of the estate into luxury accommodations, attempting to restore a way of life that had long since ceased to exist in Corfu.The estate includes the large old summer home, which has now been converted to includes the dining room, plus three more buildings which used to house the stables, the olive presses and the warehouses. With the loving hand of Nikos Velianitis, all have been converted into luxurious living quarters, complemented by uniquely restored period furniture. Most of the furniture dates to the era of British rule over the island and a lot also traces its history to the contacts of the Velianitis family with Florence, in neighbouring Italy. Some of the furniture belonged to royalty who spent summers in Corfu, including the armchair of King George II. Each apartment or studio has in-suite bathrooms and kitchenettes, TV, direct-dial phone, central heating, private veranda, hair-dryer and unique for each room antique furnitureBut Pelecas Country Club does not bask solely on the history of the estate. Since it opened in 1992, Pelecas Country Club has hosted such dignitaries as French President Francois Mitterand and Greek Prime Minister Andreas Papandreou.

Pelecas Country Club gets its name from the village of Pelecas. Pelecas village lies a few kilometres up the road from the Country Club estate. Perched on a hillside, Pelecas village is famous the world over for the magnificent views it commands over the Ionian Sea, down the west coast of Corfu Island. It was here that Kaiser Wilhelm II used to come every sundown during his stay at the Achilleion Palace in Corfu (1907-1911) to watch the sun sink into the glittering blue Ionian Sea. These days, hundreds of tourists follow his example, watching the sun set from a tower known as the Kaiser's Throne.

Four kilometres down the road from Pelecas village is the sandy beach of Glyfada -- one of the best that Corfu has to offer, surrounded by steep cliffs that drop straight into the water. Another road down from Pelecas village leads to the villages of Ermones, occupied in the Neolithic and Bronze Ages, and Vatos. The Corfu Golf Club is near Ermones. Two kilometres south of Vatos is the glorious beach of Myrtiotissa, named after the 14th-century monastery dedicated to Panaghia Myrtiotissa (Our Lady of the Myrtles). Lawrence Durrel, in his book Prospero's Cell, referred to Myrtiotissa as "perhaps the loveliest beach in the world". Tracks from Pelecas village lead down to other beaches on the west coast.
